Owl Nesting Box
Owls are nocturnal birds and heard before spot them. There are four most common owls in the UK. The tawny, Barn Owl, Long Eared Owl and Little Owl. The Tawny owl makes the classic 'Twit-Twoo' call.
The Tawny Owl is the most common owl in Europe, brown in colour and medium in size. The Tawny owl is different to the Barn Owl as its feathers are darker and its face. It also has a densely speckled mantle and dark under parts.
The Long-eared Owl has It distinctive head feathers (known as ear tufts, even though they are not ears). This owl is light brown in colour with darker brown streaks and deep orange eyes. This breed can be found widely across the UK with fewer birds in the southwest and Wales. It's food consists of small rodents in the summer months and small birds in winter. This owl's habitat is Farmland, Wetland and Woodland. There feathers are mainly Cream/Buff, Brown, Grey, Orange, Black.
The Barn Owl is very identified due to its distinctive heart-shaped beige face, it's wings and pure white just like it's underparts. The Barn Owl is a much-loved countryside bird. Widely distributed across the UK and the rest of the world.
This bird of prey has suffered declines through the 20th century. This Nocturnal bird can often be found nesting in the eves of an old barn. You know you have one by the pile of skeleton of what they eat. Mice, voles, shrews and some larger mammals and small birds.
The aptly named Little Owl is Britain’s smallest owl. The Little Owl was introduced from Europe in the late 1800s. It later colonised in England and parts of Wales. The Little Owl is a truly sedentary species, very timid and not often seen.
The Little Owls are most abundant in East Anglia, the Midlands and northern England. They prefer areas of mixed habitat with farmland and hedgerows. They use large, old trees with suitable nesting cavity. However, it is vital that we supply alternative habitats for them to use to keep them safe from predators. A little owl box is a perfect choice.
Unlike other owls, the little owl are sometimes active during the daylight hours, Little Owls can be spotted perched in old trees, siting on a fence posts or roadside sign posts.
